Treat early calls as research, not revenue
The primary goal of founder-led sales is learning, not closing. You're collecting intel on how the market perceives your problem and whether your solution resonates. Be vulnerable about being early-stage. This earns you more honest feedback than a polished pitch deck ever would.

Listen more than you talk
Shut the laptop. Don't demo in the first meeting. The best salespeople talk less than half the time because they're asking questions and probing for the real pain. Use the 'five whys' technique to uncover deeper needs. Physical note-taking signals you're actually listening.

Qualify ruthlessly at the top of funnel
Most sales failures are qualification failures. It's never a closing problem. It's always a problem of spending time on leads that were never going to buy. Before investing hours in demos, verify whether the prospect is actively measuring or managing the problem today. Stop chasing people who are 'just being nice.'

Don't leave until they're actually using it
A verbal 'yes' is not a closed deal. Implementation is. Many customers agree to buy and then go silent. Use the 'Collison Install' approach: don't leave until the product is actually set up and running. Maintain momentum by booking the next meeting before ending the current one.
